The bulk majority of human pheromones belong to a group of chemicals known as 16-androstenes. The majority of active human pheromones have an unsaturated double bond at the 16th carbon of the molecular structure. Androstanes are more polar than androstanes, and hence are hygroscopic and water soluble (this is inherently interrelated to increased efficacy at receptor sites via increased membrane permeability).

All known human pheromones contain an oxygen atom bound to the 3rd carbon in A-ring: such as in the form of a keto, or an alcohol, acetate, sulfate, or other functional groups.
